PostSubject: A lonely flatlanders journey into the E realm of RC   A lonely flatlanders journey into the E realm of RC Icon_minitimeSat Feb 28, 2009 10:45 pm

Well I am new to this electric thing. I found a pile of Electric 4 Tec parts while cleaning up my Man Cave this week. The guy I got them from on E- Bay thought they were for a 3.3 4 Tec. So I got them to finish my 3.3 4 Tec chassis with. Upon arrival at my house, I discovered that it was actually an Electric 4 Tec. So put them aside and forgot about them. Well, when I found them I decided that I would build my first electric and turn this 4 Tec into an Electric Rally 4 Tec. We will see how it turns out, but I am going to give her hell. This is what I am starting with. Hope you all enjoy this build as much as I do.

Well I got her together. Now I know what all I need to finish it to a stock state, still thinking on what other things I can do to it. I have some A- Arms around that are a little longer that the ones that are on it now. GOing to try and figure out a way to get those on here, but then I also need to figure out some drive shaft as well. So till I get some of the other parts in here it is ........

Well I cannot get pictures on here right now for some reason, but I will try again in a little while

Well here she is guys, nothing to spectacular yet, but atleast I have a lil sum sum to start with. I have some various components and parts on the way so maybe in a few weeks I will have the new rear suspension going. I will keep you all posted though for sure.

Well I have done some research this morning. The Pivot Balls on the Stampede are close enough to the same size as the pivot balls on the 4 Tec. With the HPI Rush A- Arms on her, I have extended one side of the rear wheelbase from 2.8 inches to a whopping 4.4 inches. I need to get a set of Stampede axles to compensate for the increase in width. The axles might be a touch long, but I will trim them down to what I feel is the proper size. Here is a picture for comparisons of the modified side verses the stock side .

Once I get the other side finished I will have increased the width of the rear wheelbase by 3.2 inches. This is going to be a fun build. Hope you all enjoy and I probably should have put this into the I made this thread instead of here. Sorry bout that Zues.

Thanks for the support cpee. Much appreciated. This has been fun so far and I have only just begun. I have the rear end as put together as I can get it till I get some drive shafts and tires and rims. Here she is so far

The Rush A- Arms had a little play in them from front to back, so I shimmed them as far back as I could with a few small washers to help line things up a little more.
The turnbuckles on her, I had laying around from a parts lot I bought a year or so ago. Anybody have any ideas as to who made them?

The shocks are temporary as well. I have a set of Revo shocks coming to me, that I hope will fit nicely, and finish it off.

Looking good. I don't know much about on-road electric, so what's left to complete it?

Personally, I'd probably use it as a drifter. Had a tt-01 drifter for a short time and it was fun, but I prefer the dirt. woooohoooo

well I need to get some 1.9 tires and rims, a good steering servo and servo saver, some electric stampede drive shafts and a body. Thats all I can think of off hand. Will know more once I geet going on the front end though. I am going to have to mill out a few pieces of aluminum for the front steering knuckles to mount to in the A- Arms, though. Shold not be much of a deal at all actually. I no absolutely nothing about electric either. This is my first step into electric. Thanks for the props brother.

I am not sure about a motor. Obviously I would like to have one that I can change brushes on, that would be really nice. Also would ike to get a little better ESC as well. Maybe this fall I can update the electronics in it to something a little better.

if it will fit you can slam an Emaxx motor ... Tons of run time and plenty of torque and you can keep the esc your running now .. You can run lower packs and still have tons of fun with it too .. or even an older stock traxxas 20t motor .. Those things cook and you can once again keep the same esc .. I think your on the right track and well on your way to making something totally JAMMIN .. Keep us updated and the great work ... Big V

Well the past few days I have been thinking about how to solve the front A- Arm problems. The HPI Rush is a two wheel drive stadium truck. I have replaced all four 4 Tec A arms with Rush A arms. The front had to have a plate of some sort fabricated to allow mounting of the front 4 Tec axle carrier/ steering knuckle. Made a bit of progress as far as a design and fabrication. I will post up pictures of progress tonight. This thing should be alot of fun to drive once I get a good motor and ESC in her.

PostSubject: Re: A lonely flatlanders journey into the E realm of RC   A lonely flatlanders journey into the E realm of RC Icon_minitimeWed Mar 04, 2009 7:28 pm

Well as promised here are some updated pictures of my build. I have taken the stock arms and suspension off and installed some Rush arms. I have added 4 inches total for the front and 4 inches total for the rear wheelbase. Should handle like a dream. The additional length will not allow me to use the stock shafts, so I got some Electric Stampede shafts for it. The pivot balls are the same size, so it should all hook up great. The Rush is a two wheel drive and the 4 Tec is an all wheel drive. So to be able to keep the all wheel drive, I have had to fabricate a plate out of aluminum on a metal milling machine for the front carrier/ knuckles to be supported to.

Here is a shot of the stock A arm. The silver cup is where the carrier/ knuckle mounts on the stock A arm.

Here is a few shots of the piece I made for the carrier/ knuckle to mount to. I have installed a brass sleeve in it for the screw to go through. With this sleeve, the screw will bottom out on the sleeve and ride in it as compared to bottoming out on the aluminum plate and eventually wearing it out.

The plate is still in rough form. I need to do some material removal and finishing details on it. But it gives you the general idea as to the apparatus itself. Here are some shots of the plate installed and the one side as complete as I can get it for now. I forgot to screw the pin in all the way. I hope you all can forgive me of this horride crime. I do not have proper turnbuckles as of yet. I need to do some measuring and get some actual turnbuckles soon. But for now the threaded stock will have to suffice.

And last but not least, is some pictures of the project in its current state. The tires and rims on the rear now are the street tires for my Rush. Not to sure what i will do for tires and rims on this ride yet, but these give me an idea as to how she will sit.

Comments or constructive critisism is always welcome. I will keep you all updated as progress happens. Thanks for all the support and knowledge guys!!!!

Well I thought I posted an update, but for some reason it is not here. I have spent the past few days thinking about and laying out how to build some plates for the front Carriers/ Knuckles to mount on. The Rush front A- arms were offset from everthing on the car. The drive shaft, the shocks, the upper a arm, everything. Then I realized that I am a moron. I was so excited about getting going on this thing that I was not thinking properly. Why do I have to use the front HPI Rush A- arms on the front of my Traxxas 4 Tec? I dont, what a dope. I decided to try and put a set of rear Rush a- arms on the front. Within 45 minutes, I completed the front end of this build, and I must say it looks alot nicer. Everything and I mean everything lines up perfectly!!!!! Here is a side shot so you can see how everything came together.

And here is a front shot of her. Should handle nicely now that I have extended everything by 4 inches. I need to try and find some tires and rims next.

I am waiting to get some Electric Stampede drive shafts. Once I get them I will have to shorten them a bit to fit properly. Once I get those I will update the build again. Thanks for the interest and support guys.

What would this do to the performance and handling of the car? I want to be able to take it off road as well. I have some Revo shocks coming that I will be putting on it, so that will change things a bit as well. But in regards to your statement, what would that do to the car? Thanks for the advice as well
